Do you need a boating license in Florida?

Short answer: Florida doesn’t have a “boating license.” But depending on your birth date, the driver may need a boater safety card or a temporary certificate. Here’s how to know, and how to get one before rental day.

The quick check

Look at the birth date of the person who will drive the boat:

  • Born before January 1, 1988: no boating education card is needed. Bring a valid driver’s license or photo ID.
  • Born on or after January 1, 1988: Florida requires a boating safety education card, or an accepted alternative, to operate a boat with a motor of 10 horsepower or more. All of our boats are well over 10 hp, so this applies to every rental.

Only the driver needs the card. Passengers don’t.

Three ways to meet the requirement

1. Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card

Take an approved boating safety course through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Some courses are free. The card never expires, so if you boat in Florida more than once, this is the way to go. Find a course at MyFWC.com.

2. Temporary certificate (best for visitors)

If you just want to rent a boat during your trip, the temporary certificate is the fastest option. It’s an online exam of 25 questions, and you need 19 right to pass. The certificate is valid in Florida for 90 days. We recommend the rental course at boat-ed.com. It costs $6 for materials and $3 for the test.

Do it before you arrive. Take the exam at home or at the hotel the night before, and bring proof on your phone or printed. That way your rental time starts on the water, not at the counter.

3. A boater education card from another state

Already have a NASBLA-approved boater education card from your home state? Florida accepts it. You don’t need a temporary certificate. Just bring the card.

What to bring on rental day

  • The driver’s photo ID
  • The driver’s boating education card or temporary certificate, if born on or after January 1, 1988
  • The card used for booking, which is kept on file for fuel and any damage

Our rental requirements

On top of the state rules, every driver at Clermont Boat Rental must be 25 or older with prior boating experience. Before you leave the dock, we give you a full briefing on the boat and the local waterway rules, so you’ll know your way around before you head out.

Not sure whether your group’s driver qualifies? Call us at (352) 557-3161 before you book, and we’ll help you sort it out.

This page is a plain-language summary of Florida’s boating education rules as of 2026, not legal advice. For the official rules, see MyFWC.com.
